Fast food company is fighting plastic

McDonald's is reducing one ton of plastic per month with their new efforts.

McDonalds has launched new cups for their McFlurry ice cream where they have removed the previous plastic lid. FredericiaAvisen writes that the ice cream is one of the company's very popular products so McDonald's can expect to save up to 13 tons of plastic a year through this change.

McDonald's has earlier announced that they are phasing out plastic globally until the year of 2022. Scandinavian efforts have already started where McDonald's Sweden and Norway are testing the use of paper straws instead of plastic. The commercial manager for McDonald's in Denmark, Mads Friis, is hoping that the tests will turn out good.

"We have almost 180 000 visitors a day so we know that we can have an impact and we are aware of our responsibilities. Earlier this year we started using environmentally friendly placemats and with that we yearly save almost 14 tons of harmful waste. But it won't stop there and there is no reason to wait until 2022 if we already now can start replacing the plastic that we use. I am in a close dialogue with my colleagues in other countries and if for example Sweden or Norway does find a good solution to replacing plastic straws I don't see a reason why we wouldn't introduce it in Denmark as well as soon as possible", Mads Friis implies.
